Our practice is run by a dedicated team led by Stuart Williams BDS and Maria Gonzalo GDP together with their highly trained and dedicated support staff. The whole team is actively committed to ongoing professional development.

Our surgery is comfortable and modern, it is well equipped with up-to-date equipment to ensure a high standard of treatment for all patients.

At Newquay Dental Centre we offer comprehensive dental care for the whole family, together with specialised care. We are a patient orientated practice and appreciate that anxiety about dental care is not uncommon.

We aim to help you overcome any anxieties you may have; help you achieve a healthy mouth and give you the essential knowledge to prevent problems arising in the future.

Dentists

Dr Maria Gonzalo

Country of Qualification: Spain

Maria qualified as a dentist in 2006, in Madrid. She joined Newquay Dental Centre in 2011 before becoming a partner of the practice in 2015. In 2017, Maria further qualified as an Invisalign provider with the aim of being able to offer her patients a more discreet range of orthodontic treatment.

For Maria, the comfort of her patients has always been a key priority, and she endeavours to ensure even the most nervous patients can be at ease in the surgery. 

With over 16 years’ experience she enjoys creating beautiful smiles with minimally invasive dentistry. She loves learning and advancing her skills to deliver the best care for her patients.

Stuart qualified in 1999 at Manchester University. Following his one year’s vocational training he began work in Manchester before moving to Australia. He has worked in NHS and Private practices both in Australia and the UK. Stuart is a keen sportsman, having played rugby professionally. He enjoys surfing and is married with two daughters.

Stuart started working at Newquay Dental Centre in 2009, and in 2013 he became a partner in the business. He has gained additional skills and is now able to place dental implants.

Chris qualified from Dundee University in 2003. He also works as an Associate Specialist in oral surgery at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

He completed his MFDS through the Royal College of Surgeons in 2014, obtained a masters degree in restorative dentistry from Peninsula University in 2018, and undertook a year long implant training course in Bristol in 2021. 

Chris practices all aspects of dentistry and has a particular interest in oral surgery, oral medicine and implants.

Michaela Skewes

Michaela has worked in dentistry since 2006. She started as a dental nurse and gained her National Certificate in 2008. She then gained extra qualifications in Oral Health Education and Radiography.

She studied dual diplomas in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy in Salford Dental School. She qualified in March 2017 and was awarded the highest academic achievement award in her year group.

Once qualified, Michaela moved back to Cornwall and started working as a dental therapist and hygienist in private practices in Penzance and Camborne, before joining Newquay Dental Centre in August 2017.

In her free time, Michaela likes walking with her dogs and partner, keeping fit and socialising with her friends and family.

Victoria started dental nursing in 2001 before attending Newcastle Dental School. She gained the dual qualification in Dental Hygiene and Therapy, qualifying in 2008. Since then, Victoria has worked in a number of NHS and private practices around Cornwall. She has also worked as a dental therapist for the Community Dental Service, mainly treating patients with severe dental anxiety and phobias.

Victoria is very passionate about creating a positive dental experience for her patients, in a more relaxed way, whilst also giving patients the tools and knowledge to have a healthy mouth.

When Victoria is not at work she is kept very busy with her young family and dogs, enjoying the great Cornish outdoors.

Louise joined our Newquay Dental Centre team in August 2018.

She qualified as a dental nurse in 2012 whilst working in Nottingham.

She then moved to Cornwall in 2014 and has worked in several dental practices, gaining lots of experience in her chosen career. She is currently learning how to take radiographs

In her spare time, Louise loves to sew, read and spend time with her family.

She enjoys socialising with family and friends and has a variety of hobbies including Zumba, horse riding and walking. She also loves taking her Westie Hugo to dog agility classes.

Victoria Hawken

Kim is a true local, having lived her whole life in the St Columb Minor area. Since leaving school she has worked in the hospitality industry, but wanting a change of career and fresh challenges, Kim joined our Newquay Dental Centre team in September 2018.

Kim is married with two young children. She has a special interest in children’s dentistry and hopes to use her Early Years qualification to help put our younger patients at ease.

In her spare time, Kim enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as listening to music and visiting the theatre.

Lauren joined Newquay Dental Centre in November 2022. She has started her dental nurse apprenticeship and is already working hard on her level 3 Diploma.

She currently works as part of our reception team and is also beginning her journey in the dental surgery, where she is keen to learn the skills needed to become a qualified dental nurse.

Please read this letter carefully as it gives details of important changes regarding your future dental care.

For many years we have been fully committed to providing patients with the highest level of NHS patient care and it continues to be a pleasure to treat all of our patients.

Over the last few months, we have become increasingly busy, and it has become apparent that we now need to make some changes to the way we practise, given the demands on our time. Our main priority is to continuously strive to improve the dental care we can offer to our patients. We want to be able to spend more time with you and offer you a wider choice of treatments in a more relaxed environment, and also reduce the appointment waiting times.

We have seen major changes in dentistry and the wider world in recent years. Real terms funding cuts plus recruitment and retention challenges have put a strain on us providing routine NHS care for patients. All of this has led us to reflect on what we can offer as a dental practice and how we can make best use of the resources we have available.

The quality of care we offer our patients is of utmost importance to us, so we have been working hard behind the scenes making important decisions and changes in the strive to improve.

What is changing?

Therefore, after much deliberation, as of 1st October 2023, we will only be seeing patients on an independent basis. In order to assist with this change, we would like to introduce our membership package for the practice.

As a parent/guardian registered on one of our dental membership plans, we will continue to see your children up to the age of 5 years old free of charge for their routine dental health examinations.

Our patient membership plan helps you keep your teeth and gums healthy by allowing you to budget monthly for your dental care so that you can attend on a basis that’s right for you. Through regular examinations and hygiene appointments we can spot issues early, potentially saving you from more invasive treatment in the future, and it is cheaper than paying as you go. Full details of our membership plans and your options are available here.

Pay-as-you-go.

For those of you who do not wish to join the plan, we will still be able to offer you a full range of treatments on a private pay-as-you go basis, however please note, you will not benefit from the discounts off treatments or other member benefits.

If you want to stay with us on this basis, please speak to a member of our team to reserve your place on our lists, and book or confirm your next appointment if you do not have one already.

What happens next?

If you have an NHS appointment booked with Newquay Dental Centre prior to 1st October 2023, please attend this as normal. We will be seeing you for this and any subsequent treatment you may require under the current NHS arrangements. At this appointment we will be able to discuss what we feel would be the best option for you to maintain your dental health, then you will need to decide if you want to continue with us as your dentist on an independent basis or should you wish to access another NHS dental practice, you can visit the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk to find a local dental practice that is currently accepting patients or telephone the NHS Waiting list on 0333 006 3300.

If you require any more information about becoming a member of our scheme, any of the changes outlined in this letter or would like to discuss the options available to you before your next appointment, our reception team will be more than happy to discuss this with you in person, or by phone on 01637 879207.
